Anyone smart with computers, help!!!?

can ppl see your ims without accessing the computer you wrote them on? my friend is freaking out thinking her dad is somehow able to record whatever she says on instant message although im trying to explain all he can see is her browsing history. he said to her he can see what websites she goes to by looking on their server computer or something so now shes all worried about our instant message conversations being recorded thanks
