How would I handle this matter?

As controversial as Christmas is now I suspect that the Captain truly believes that violates policy or is personally opposed to it. Since it was by gossip that you heard about it I would not take any actions besides preparing yourself if you are confronted about it. A quote my dad always said, "Expect the best, prepare for the worst."
