I more or less agree with your position except for your mention of Wallis, Duchess of Windsor. It really was in the interest of many that Wallis be allowed to cause an abdication. The Duke was "somewhat" sympathetic to the Nazi cause, as were many others in the highest circles of society, and his ascension to the throne would have been a problem for the country.
