Can battery acid potentially harm an animal when ingested?

We were away and came home to find that our 1 year old Yorkie had completely demolished a flashlight and got the batteries out of the remote and chewed a bunch of other things. We counted about 4 AA Batteries he had chewed through. There was vomit on the floor as well. He seems fine and everything. Anyone know if it's going to be very harmful? He didn't like completely take all the acid from the battery, I'm thinking he got a taste and spit it out, probably. Let me know soon! Thanks!!
